1. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers
Suggested Draft Position: Top 5

As the reigning NFL MVP, Aaron Rodgers must be considered the consensus top
quarterback in fantasy this year. The Green Bay signal caller has the ability to
accumulate points both through the air and on the ground this year, making him
more valuable than Tom Brady.

2. Tom Brady, New England Patriots
Suggested Draft Position: Top 8

Brady is still an elite fantasy quarterback, accruing 5,235 yards and 39
touchdowns last year. The Patriot attack looks to be even more potent this year with
the addition of wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, and Brady’s stats will rise as a result.
With the lack of solid RB1 options this season, consider Brady if you’re picking in
the 5-8 range.

Fantasy Football: Building a League Winner From Scratch, Part 2

Last time, I talked about how I missed the draft for my fantasy league and ended up with an autodrafted team.

Like I said, I’m rather content to turn this bit of unfortunate luck into a project of my own and build a winner from this randomized roster.

Time to reveal my draft results (16 person league, serpentine draft):

Round One, Pick 14: Cam Newton (Great pick here as I grab the player I would have drafted as high as fourth overall. The other picks weren’t good, but I’m happy with Newton.)

Round Two, Pick 3: Adrian Peterson (Oh no. I was mortified to see that the computer burned a pick on Peterson, who’s coming off an ACL tear and has a lot of mileage on him, when players like Doug Martin and Frank Gore were on the board.)

Round Three, Pick 14: Miles Austin (Wasn’t terribly mad here. My team gets a No. 1 wide receiver from a wide open passing attack. Austin produces and I’m not kicking and screaming with this pick.)

Round Four, Pick 3: Demaryius Thomas (Another ‘meh’ type pick, Thomas could put up a big season with Peyton Manning but indications out of training camp are that Manning and Eric Decker have developed better chemistry. We’ll keep tabs on this receiver.)

Round Five, Pick 14: DeSean Jackson (I wanted to throw my computer after seeing this one. The only reason that Jackson gets picked in any fantasy league is because he’s exciting and well-known. My fifth round pick out the window for DeSean Jackson. Where do I submit complaints?)

Round Six, Pick 3: Jonathan Stewart (It’s impossible to get me to stop talking about how great of a running back Stewart is, but he makes no sense as a fantasy football guy. He’s sharing carries with DeAngelo Williams, conceding goal line carries to Mike Tolbert, and fighting with his quarterback, Cam Newton, to even be the No. 1 rusher on the team. Hate it.)

Round Seven, Pick 14: Owen Daniels (I understand the logic of grabbing a tight end here, but Jared Cook went off the board just a few picks later. Cook is my number three rated tight end this year behind Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham. He was sitting right there. Plus, Daniels gets injured a lot. He’s likely not to be in my starting lineup come opening day.)

Round Eight, Pick 3: Pittsburgh DEF (Good pick here. The first good pick since the first round. They’re not San Francisco’s defense, but Pittsburgh’s defense racks up points and makes plays. No problem with the computer grabbing a vaunted defense here.)

Round Nine, Pick 14: Dan Bailey (With the chance to add some underrated value at wide receiver or running back, the computer goes and drafts a kicker. All due respect to Dan Bailey, but I’d never draft a kicker in a fantasy draft. I just dislike this pick.)

Round Ten, Pick 3: Michael Bush (Did I do something horrible to deserve Michael Bush on my team? This is a running back who will sit behind Matt Forte and hope to vulture some carries up the middle in the interest of keeping Forte’s legs fresh. I don’t want to deal with this guy on my team.)

Round Eleven, Pick 14: Davone Bess (I like the value pick in the eleventh round here, being that Bess will see a majority of the targets for the Dolphins. An excellent route runner who catches the ball on a consistent basis, Bess could put up big numbers. He’s a deep sleeper and a definite lock to make my opening day roster.)

Round Twelve, Pick 3: Dallas Clark (Again, I don’t mind the logic of picking another tight end, but I don’t like Clark at this advanced of an age and there’s no reason to waste picks at this point in time. I’ll keep an eye on this tight end, though. He’s not a bad player.)

Round Thirteen, Pick 14: Joseph Addai (This is a joke. It has to be a joke. Addai wasn’t even on a team when this draft occurred and he still isn’t on a team. This is the definition of a wasted draft pick.)

Round Fourteen, Pick 3: New England DEF (The next pick was Tim Tebow, right after this. I would have done anything to grab Tebow if I had this selection, but the computer obviously doesn’t like a versatile quarterback who will probably be a starter by midseason, scoring touchdowns through the air and with his legs. This is infuriating.)

Round Fifteen, Pick 14: Nick Novak (I have nothing to say.)

Round Sixteen, Pick 3: Jason Campbell (Though players like Kevin Kolb and Matt Hasselbeck, fighting for a starting job, were available, the computer decided to go with Jason Campbell. Jason Campbell. This leaves a bad taste in my mouth.)

Post-draft roster (with no moves yet made):

QB Cam Newton
QB Jason Campbell
RB Adrian Peterson
RB Jonathan Stewart
RB Michael Bush
RB Joseph Addai
WR Miles Austin
WR Demaryius Thomas
WR DeSean Jackson
WR Davone Bess
TE Owen Daniels
TE Dallas Clark
K Dan Bailey
K Nick Novak
DEF Pittsburgh
DEF New England

NFL Top 10 Quarterbacks: Eli Nachmany’s Top Field Generals for 2012

In the second of a two-part series (the other in which Derek Brody ranks his top ten quarterbacks), Eli Nachmany compiles a countdown of his top NFL signal-callers starting with number ten.

10. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons

I’m starting off my top ten with a quarterback that many would rank higher.

Matt Ryan’s a good quarterback but he hasn’t yet won a playoff game, despite having fantastic weapons on a stacked Atlanta Falcons team. He puts up good numbers and wins regular season games, but he doesn’t have the ‘it’ factor that I once thought he had.
